Officers responded to investigate the back-to-back attempted robbery and fraud reports at the Wawa at 321 Buschs Frontage Road in Annapolis around 8:55 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 5.
The victim, who is the manager, told police that she received a phone call around 3:30 a.m. from a man claiming to represent Wawa.
The caller told the manager that Wawa had an overdue bill that needed to be paid and instructed her to use money from the store safe and deposit it into a Bitcoin machine at the neighboring Exxon station.
Just before the deposit, an Exxon employee told the Wawa manager that the call had most likely been a scam.
The manager had just left the store to return to Wawa when a man grabbed her arm and tried to take the money, police said.
She was able to break free, while the suspect fled.
He is described as a heavy-set white male in his 40s and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, according to police.
Anyone with information is asked to call 410-222-6145 or the Tip Line at 410-222-4700.
